Creditors have four months to file claims after notice is published, and an informal estate generally cannot be closed until six months after the personal representative is appointed. Simple estates often close within about a year.

For probate, bring the death certificate, the original will if there is one, and deeds, account statements, and any court or creditor notices. For other matters, bring any court papers, existing orders, and a list of upcoming dates. Write your questions down ahead of time.
